ARTHUR MOELANTS
CINEMATOGRAPHER
Hello, I'm Arthur. Welcome to my website.
I draw inspiration and skills from many places. I originally started working as a music recording engineer, then ventured into filmmaking while working in a recording studio. Simultaneously I started working a part-time job as researcher in immersive music.
After some time working with writer-directors, I started to notice that I'm constantly referring back to music, taking inspiration and perspectives from it.

I like to dive deep with creatives, no matter whether I'm working with a director or a music artist. I like to get inside their heads, figure out what they are really trying to express, often before they realize it themselves... and I don't even have to realize it either.

I like to see myself as a 'goalkeeper' of their creative vision. Nothing is more thrilling than a room where interesting ideas are tossed around. However, not all of these ideas will work to really drive the story and vision and sometimes we need to puzzle them together in a way that makes sense, or to kill our darlings. Sometimes you just need someone to tell you that.
Throughout the process I like to challenge the artist in their vision, figuring out what they are really trying to express and keeping it focussed to that.
I will always believe in the vision of the director, even if they can't express why exactly they want a certain thing to be done a certain way. Instead of forcing my idea onto them, I prefer to figure out why they want it and find a way to shape it into the visual language. In this way I try to be a sparring partner for the artist.
People often describe me as a very logical person (INTP), which can be complementary to people who have many ideas but tend to have troubles structuring them into a final work.
I did gather some credits as a co-screenplay writer and co-editor, which - just like cinematography or producing a song - are merely about translating creative inspirations into a technical medium.
By being present at the writing stage, the visual language is conceived early on with the director and other departments. Consequently, the style becomes natural and intuitive to everyone involved. By staying close during post-production, I'm present to guide the technical possibilities and limitations of the image, to help refine the narrative. I'm not "married" to my images in a way that they can't be manipulated or shaped. As long as it makes the narrative stronger, I'm all for it!
By being involved throughout the whole creative process I love to connect deeply to the director and crew and help figure out how we can bring the creative vision to life. To me, cinematography is about much more than placing the camera somewhere and making a beautiful shot. It's about being the right hand to another creative and finding a way to help them thrive.

"I try to get the best out of any creative" seems to be the only way I want to describe myself.

So feel free to explore around, maybe you'll see something interesting. Maybe you'll even want to collaborate. I'll leave my contact information around.
See ya!
